1. A scroll compressor head is made up of two spirals. One as shown by the solid line is stationary; while the second spiral, broken line, orbits the first. This action creates an almost continuous circulation of trapped pockets of refrigerant gas that are constantly being squeezed and moved towards the eye of the scroll.

2. As the spirals continue to orbit, the gas is compressed into two increasingly smaller pockets. By the time the gas arrives at the center port, it is fully compressed and has reached its highest temperature and pressure.

3. Actually, during operations, all six gas pockets are in various stages of compression at all times, resulting in a nearly continuous pumping action. Since there are only two moving parts, the energy necessary to operate the compressor motor is reduced, as is the wear and tear.
